August Birthstone: Peridot

August Birthstone: Peridot

August babies, your birthstone is literally out of this world! 🌟

Okay, here's a wild fact: peridot has been found in meteorites! While most peridot comes from deep in the Earth's mantle (brought up by volcanic activity), some has actually arrived on our planet from outer space. How's that for a conversation starter?

Why Peridot is One of Our Faves

This one is really personal for me (Jamie). Growing up, I spent summers at my family's plantation home on the Big Island, and my brother and I would play in the dirt roads for hours. One of our favorite things to do was dig through the red dirt looking for tiny green stones — little pieces of olivine that sparkled in the sunlight.

We'd collect them in jars, so proud of our "treasures." I didn't know it then, but those little green stones were baby versions of peridot! Olivine is the mineral that becomes gem-quality peridot, and Hawaii's volcanic soil is full of it.

So when I see peridot today, I'm instantly transported back to those summer days with my brother — the red dirt, the warm sun, the excitement of finding another tiny green gem. It's such a happy memory. This stone is so close to my childhood, and that fondness for this gorgeous green has never left me. 💚

That Gorgeous Green

Peridot has a very distinctive color — a bright, lime-green with golden undertones that's completely unique in the gemstone world. Unlike emerald's deep forest green, peridot is lighter, livelier, and perfect for summer.

The color comes from iron, and it's one of the few gemstones that only comes in one color. (Other gems like sapphire come in many colors, but peridot is always some shade of yellow-green.)

The Sun Stone

The ancient Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun" because of its bright, glowing color. They believed it protected the wearer from nightmares when set in gold. Cleopatra's famous emerald collection? Some historians think many of those stones were actually peridot!

Peridot represents:

  • Abundance and prosperity — attracting wealth and success
  • Renewal and growth — perfect for new beginnings
  • Happiness and good cheer — that sunny color lifts the spirits
  • Protection — especially from negative emotions
  • Healing — particularly for the heart

A Stone of Positivity

If you're shopping for an August birthday, peridot is such a joyful choice. It's believed to help release jealousy, resentment, and other heavy emotions — replacing them with lightness and optimism. Who couldn't use a little more of that?
